Spin Classes

Spin Classes have become one of the most popular forms of indoor cycling exercise and practices the art of Spinning. Developed by the word-class cyclist and personal trainer, Johnny G. during the 1980s, Spinning is a highly active exercise that takes place in a class setting using specially designed stationary bikes. Although it is often considered to be an exercise for elite athletes, Spin Classes are designed to be an athletic training program for people of all fitness levels. Its popularity first emerged from California, where the first spinning center opened in 1989, but the appeal of Spin Classes has spread internationally.

Based on the goal that the Spinning participant, through the use of this exercise, will gain mental fortitude as well as enhance their physical condition, Spinning was developed by Johnny G to provide training for his varied athletic activities. Additionally, a martial arts black belt, Johnny G developed Spinning as a group activity that provides a high-intensity workout based on heart rate parameters. The stationary bikes used in Spin Classes provide an experience that is closer to riding a real bike than any other stationary bike. Based on an innovative design, the stationary bikes used in Spinning classes prominently feature a large, chain-driven flywheel that to get starting can be compared to starting a real bicycle from a dead stop. The Spinning stationary bikes also feature a seat that not only can be adjusted up and down but also horizontally, as well as multi-position handle bars that can also adjust up and down. This design allows the participant to find a position on the stationary bike that they favor and allows for the recreation of a favorite position on a regular bike. For biking enthusiasts, there are now Spinning stationary bikes that have replaced pedals that have toe clips with clip-less pedals, which allows participants to wear cycling shoes during this exercise.

However, classes for Spinning are not designed specifically for biking enthusiasts. Comparable to aerobics, Spin classes provide a highly intensive workout that promotes cardiovascular fitness while burning calories. Participants in a 40-minute Spinning class burn an average of 500 calories during the workout. Spinning also provides a number of benefits over aerobics as Spinning is a low-impact activity that is easier on the joints and is also an activity that does not require learning specialized moves so anybody can start a Spin class right away.

Typically, Spin classes last 40 minutes and takes place in an environment where motivating music is played for the participants. Often arranged in a circle where the participants are able to see the Spinning instructor, who is also on one of the Spinning stationary bikes, Spin classes are highly reliant on the Spinning instructor. The Spinning instructor leads the workout, telling participants when to sprint, ease up, or add resistance as a way to stimulate hill biking. The instructor also uses a variety of visualization techniques that assists participants into feeling that they are cycling over hills and through valleys. A particularly fun, highly motivating instructor makes Spin classes a particularly popular activity.

Besides the cardiovascular and calorie-burning benefits of this exercise, Spin classes provide a highly effective way of toning and shaping your quadriceps. It is also an easy activity to learn and much more enjoyable than riding on a regular stationary exercise bike on your own.
