Sivananda
Sivananda Yoga is often described as the ‘synthesis of yoga. In its more popular
forms it combines the following types of yoga.
- Hatha Yoga: Compromising many yoga postures
- Pranayama: Specialized breathing techniques
- Shaithilyam: Physical and mental relaxation
- Dhyana: Meditation and mental discipline
- Mithyahara: Your diet and consumption patterns
Born in 1887 Swami Sivananda, the founder of the yoga that bears his name,
was a full-time medical practitioner before he devoted his life to perfecting
his form of yoga and its ancient healing powers. He believed that modern medicine
was failing humanity on many levels and that our world civilization could be
more efficient, healthy and happy if people took their health in their own hands
instead of relying on doctors. Therefore Sivananda yoga is more of a lifestyle
system than an exercise or mere stretching. Sivananda died in 1963 at the age
of 76. But his legacy of living a balanced life lives on Sivananda yoga teachings
can be found in the 80 Sivananda yoga centers around the world. With over 10,000
trained teachers worldwide access to this ancient knowledge could be at your
fingertips. There are also Sivananda yoga retreats and vacations that will transport
you away from the toxic environment that is your daily life, and into the tranquil
balanced bliss that is Sivananda yoga.
