La Stone Therapy ®
La Stone therapy is a type of massage therapy that uses stones of all shapes,
sizes, and varying temperatures to elicit physical healing, mental relaxation
and a spiritual connection to earth energy. Warm stones encourage the exchange
of blood and lymph and provide soothing heat for deep-tissue work. Cold stones
aid with inflammation, moving blood out of the area and balancing male/female
energies. La Stone therapy uses heated and cooled stones to relieve stiff and
sore muscles and often produces long-term results alleviating many chronic and
acute problems.
During La Stone therapy, stones are placed in varying positions on the body
for energy balancing or are used by the therapist for specific trigger-point
work. The alternating heat and cold of thermotherapy brings the entire body
into the healing process, with the rapid exchange of blood and oxygen and rise
and fall of respiration as the body seeks homeostasis. La Stone therapy is a
therapeutic massage, using heated Basalt Lava stones and frozen marble in combination
with traditional massage techniques and aromatherapy oils.
La Stone therapy treatments are 90 minutes long. During the treatment, the
client lies on a massage table in a comfortable, warm room. La Stone therapy
treatment begins with heated stones placed under and around the client, and
used to massage the client. During the session, stones of different temperatures
continue to be placed on, around and under the body. The smooth stones are used
to massage the entire body, relaxing tight, contracted muscles. Cooled stones
are used as a contrast medium to stimulate a deep circulatory effect within
the body. La Stone therapy is a cleansing, immune strengthening and relaxing
experience.
La Stone therapy is a massage ritual based on Native American healing. The
contrast of heat and cold (thermotherapy) is believed to stimulate relaxation
and deep circulation, which activates the lymphatic system and detoxifies the
body. The proper functioning of the lymphatic system is critical to the body's
ability to operate at peak performance, as the lymphatic system drains fluids,
detoxifies and regenerates tissues, filters out toxins and foreign substances,
and helps us maintain a healthy immune system. When lymph circulation stagnates,
toxins accumulate and compromise cellular functioning, leading to physical ailments.
La Stone therapy is nurturing and intense due to the warmth and weight of the
stones, and the contrasting temperatures experienced during the treatment. Most
clients report feeling deeply relaxed and rejuvenated after treatment, however,
due to the deep circulatory effects of La Stone therapy, those who suffer from
heart conditions, or pregnant women, should not use this kind of treatment.
La Stone therapy was developed by Mary Nelson-Hannigan in 1993, and has since
been one of the most sought after forms of massage.
