Vinca Minor (also know as Lesser Periwinkle)
What is Vinca Minor?
Vinca Minor is a perennial herb that is also known as Lesser Periwinkle and
Myrtle. Vinca Minor can reach 30 inches and has a glossy green look, with oblong
leaves that are two inches long. Vinca Minor produces blue, violet or white
flowers that generally bloom from May to June. The leaves of Vinca Minor are
used medicinally.
Found in Europe and western Asia, Vinca Minor prefers; partial sun or full
shade; rich well drained soils and grows along woodland borders and roadsides.
Vinca Minor contains alkanoids and Tannins. The alkanoids present in Vinca
Minor (Vincamine and vincine) have the effect of increasing the blood flow and
also the amount of oxygen that goes to the brain.
What are the benefits and uses of Vinca Minor?
The main effects produced by Vinca Minor come from the alkanoids present in
the leaves. These constituents give Vinca Minor astringent and blood the following
uses:
- Effective mouthwash to guard against gingivitis
- Helps stop internal bleeding, heavy menstrual bleeding and nosebleeds
- Treatment of: arteriosclerosis and dementia due to lack of blood.
What is the right dosage of Vinca Minor to use?
Available in extract form Vinca Minor should be taken as a dietary supplement.
The dosage recommended is ½ to 1 (14-28) ml of extract 2-3 times per day.
What are the side effects of Vinca Minor?
Vinca Minor contains Vinpocetine, which has been reported to sporadically cause
an upset stomach, flushing of the skin, and a skin rash. Vinca Minor also cause
minor stomach upset. Vinca Minor should not be taken during pregnancy or breast-feeding.
