Pleurisy Root
What is Pleurisy Root?
Pleurisy root is a perennial herb with several stems that grow to 3 feet and
branch out at the top. The leaves from Pleurisy root are dark green on the upper
surfaces and pale green on the undersides. Richly colored orange flowers bloom
between June-September in clusters 3-5 inches across, followed by long narrow
pods.
Also called Butterfly Weed, Canada Root, Silkweed, Tuber Root and Wind Root,
Pleurisy root has the Latin name Asclepias tuberosa and is a member of the Milkweed
family. Pleurisy root is found mostly in southwestern and Midwestern United
States along roadsides during the heat of midsummer.
What are the benefits and uses of Pleurisy Root?
Although not fully understood Pleurisy Root has many medical uses, including
being helpful in the following conditions:
· Chronic Bronchitis
· Burns
· Coughing
· Insect bites
· Peptic Ulcers
· Urinary tract infections
What is the right dosage of Pleurisy Root to use?
Pleurisy root is available in extract form and the dosage recommended is 1-3
ml (approx 28-84 drops) 3 times a day.
What are the side effects of Pleurisy Root?
At the amounts recommended above, pleurisy root generally has no adverse effects.
Excessive intake can however cause intestinal nausea, vomiting, cramping, and
diarrhea. Pregnant women should avoid pleurisy root as it may stimulate uterine
contractions.
