Fennel
What is Fennel?
Fennel (Latin name Foeniculum vulgare) is a feathery aromatic perennial
Chinese herb of the carrot family. Found mainly in the Mediterranean region,
fennel is now cultivated in mild regions around the world. Fennel will grow
in most soil but the richer the soil the more tender the foliage.
Other names for Fennel include Hsiao-hui-hsiang, Large Fennel, Shatapushpa,
Shih-lo, Sweet Fennel, Tzu-mo-lo, Wild Fennel and Xiao-hue-xiang.
Fennel contains volatile oil, essential fatty acids, flavonoids vitamins and
minerals. The parts of the plant that are used for medical purposes are the
seeds, roots and oil.
What are the benefits and uses of Fennel?
Fennel is generally though of as a herb for digestion. The volatile oils in
Fennel are thought to increase the appetite, enhance the secretion of digestive
enzymes and promote digestion and absorption. Fennel has other properties which
allow it to be used to treat a range of conditions, including:
- Indigestion
- Heartburn
- Constipation
- Menstruation
- Fluid retention
- Urinary infections.
- Arthritis
- Urinary stones
- Flatulence
What is the right dosage of Fennel to use?
Fennel normally comes as an extract and the recommended dosage is 1-2ml (approx.
28-56 drops) 3 times a day.
What are the side effects of Fennel?
There are no significant adverse effects reported from using fennel, although
pregnant or lactating women should avoid this herb, as well as anyone with an
estrogen-dependent cancer.
