What is Dong Quai Root?
Dong Quai root is an aromatic Chinese herbal remedy made from the root of Angelica
Sinensis, a plant that grows at high altitudes in China, Korea and Japan.
The flowers of Dong Quai are greenish-white and the root has a strong smell
and a sweet taste. Dong Quai is known as a tonic herb for women and is used
in the treatment of a range of female problems.
The compounds that are responsible for medicinal actions of Dong Quai include
various falvoured crystal compounds, called coumarins and flavonoids, which
are responsible for the plants colours. These compounds can stimulate the central
nervous system and allow the herb to act as a mild energizer.
Dong Quai's health benefits have made it famous as "the female ginseng", because
it supports female reproductive system in much the same way that ginseng supports
the male reproductive system.
What are the uses and benefits of Dong Quai Root?
As Dong Quai is a herb manly for women it is used extensively to help treat
such conditions including:
- Premenstrual syndrome
- Menstrual cramps
- Menopause symptoms
- Menstrual difficulties.
What is the correct dosage of Dong Quai Root to use?
Don Quai root is available in capsules, and extract form. It is difficult to
suggest a specific dosage amount as each type varies in dosage, however as a
general guideline extract dosage is 1ml (or 20-40 drops) 3 times a day and for
capsules 1 capsule, 3 times a day.
What are the side effects of Dong Quai Root?
Dong Quai root is considered to be of very low toxicity, but it may cause some
fair-skinned persons to become more sensitive to sunlight. It should also not
be taken in large quantities by pregnant women.
