Swedish Massage
Swedish Massage is the massage method most familiar in Western societies and
involves massage techniques that manipulate soft tissue through a variety of
specialized tactics. Using massage oils, the purpose of Swedish Massage is to
relax the patient and also improve circulation, ease muscle aches, ease muscle
tension, and improve flexibility in the patient. The techniques used in Swedish
Massage were not developed until the late 19th century where it was developed
by the Swedish doctor, poet, and educator, Per Henrik Ling, who was influence
by his studies of physiology and gymnastics.
As Swedish Massage has increased in popularity, it has evolved to the point
where it has spawned different massage forms that produce different outcomes
but are often referred to as a Swedish Massage. The relaxation massage uses
Swedish Massage techniques as a way to relieve muscular tension while promoting
general relaxation. A remedial massage also uses Swedish Massage techniques
to aid in rehabilitation for individuals with injured soft tissues that include
muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Sports Massage has become a popular form of
massage which uses Swedish Massage techniques to enhance athletic performance.
Despite the different variations of Swedish Massage, this form of massage uses
five main strokes that have a number of variations. These techniques are used
to achieve the relaxation and healing effects of Swedish Massage. The five main
strokes are:
- Effleurage: long, gliding strokes that start from either the neck
down to the base of the spine or the shoulder down to the fingertips. This
stroke is aimed towards the heart to aid blood and lymphatic flow.
- Petrissage: using gentle pressure, this stroke involves lifting muscles
up and away from the bones followed by a rolling or squeezing motion. This
stroke is used to increase circulation by flushing toxins from the nerve tissue
and muscle.
- Friction: this stroke involves deep circular or transverse movements
that are made with the thumb pads or fingertips. This stroke is used to break
down adhesions (or knots) and therefore increases flexibility in the muscles
and joints.
- Tapotement: either the edge of the hands, the tips of the fingers,
or a close fist is used alternatively to strike the muscles in a percussive
movement. This stroke is used to release tension in the muscles and prevent
cramped muscles from developing into spasms.
- Vibration: hands are pressed on the back or limbs and are then shook
rapidly in this stroke. The purpose of this movement is to increase the power
of muscles to contact and is intended to increase circulation.
During a Swedish Massage, the client disrobes and lies on a massage table.
However, they are draped during the massage process and music, candles, or aromatherapy
is often used to create a relaxed environment. While predominantly used to help
relax, Swedish Massage has a number of health benefits. Its main purpose is
to increase oxygen flow in the blow as well as release toxins found in muscles.
Other health benefits include:
- Increases in blood oxygenation and circulation.
- Increases in metabolism function which calms the nervous system.
