Natural Versus Homogenized Peanut Butter
A common misconception is that natural peanut butter is healthier than homogenized
peanut butter because, the theory goes, homogenized peanut butter is full of
trans-fats. However, an analysis by Prevention magazine (the magazine that popularized
the Peanut Butter Diet) found otherwise. Magazine staff hired laboratory staff
to measure trans fat quantities in four popular homogenized brands: Skippy,
Jif, Peter Pan and Finast. The results: The levels of trans fats per 2-tablespoon
serving in all four brands were far lower than 0.5 gram. True, natural brands
are completely trans-fat free; however, homogenized brands also have strikingly
low levels of trans fat. Another common concern is that homogenized brands contain
far more sugar than do natural brands. However, for each 2-tablespoon serving,
homogenized brands contain an average of 3 grams of sugar, while natural brands
contain 2 grams. Not enough of a difference to write off your favourite brand
of peanut butter. The bottom line: natural or homogenized are both good for
you. It’s your choice!
