How does the Atkins diet plan allow you to lose weight?
We’ve already learned one way in which the Atkins diet plan allows you to lose
weight: the initiation of lipolysis-ketosis during the Atkins diet Induction
phase, and the transition made by your body to burning fat instead of carbs
for energy. Another way your body loses weight on the Atkins diet plan relates
to the way the body uses sugar as fuel. Your body converts sugar to fuel using
the hormone insulin. Insulin allows our cells to transform carbohydrates into
glucose by controlling the amount of our blood sugar. The body keeps blood sugar
at a reasonable level through the secretion of insulin. Insulin causes sugar
not used for fuel to be stored as fat. It also prevents the body from burning
stored fat. The Atkins diet plan believes this "insulin response" is responsible
for the continuous addition of fat to our bodies. An excess of sugar-filled
and high-carbohydrate foods, then, will lead to an excess accumulation of body
fat.
On the other hand, a low-carbohydrate diet allows your body to release less
insulin. According to the Atkins diet, when insulin levels are normal, your
body will begin to burn its own fat as fuel. By keeping insulin levels normal,
then, your body not only burns fat, but it leads to less hunger and fewer cravings.
