Chakra 1: Root
The Sanskrit name for the first chakra is Muladhara, which means root. The
Hindus depict this center as a lotus of four petals, within which is a square
and represents the four directions (petal), and the firm foundation of the material
world (square). In the centre of the root chakra is the symbol for the seed
sound, believed to contain the essence of the chakra.
The first chakra is located at the perineum, midway between the anus and the
genitals. Chakras have been described as vortices of energy and at the level
of the first chakra, our vortex is the densest. The root chakra contains the
primary 8 cells that have all of the knowledge of creation and remain the only
cells in your body that do not change in your lifetime. To ignore this chakra
or its elements is to threaten our very survival. If we do not balance this
chakra before we progress to others, our growth will be without roots, ungrounded
and will lack the stability necessary for longevity.
The root chakra is given the colour red and is affected by the kidney and bladder.
Problems with the root chakra are manifested as the following problems: Constipation;
diarrhea; piles; colitis; Crohn's disease; cold fingers and toes; bladder control
problems; hypertension; kidney stones; impotence; problems with hips, legs and
feet.
