Accupressure
Accupressure is the traditional Chinese technique of pressure point massage.
The ideas behind accupressure are based on the same principles as general massage:
stimulating the flow of energy, known as ‘Chi’, around the body to generate
increased health benefits.
Accupressure uses light pressure from the fingers, and not needles, to stimulate
the body’ Chi and release blocked or congested energy from where it is trapped.
The body’s energy flows through a series of networked pathways throughout the
entire body and at points, called junctions, the energy can become blocked and
lead to a reduced immune system, which in turn can encourage illness to thrive.
A blockage of the body’s chi can cause a build up of toxins in the muscle tissues
of the body and as a result induce stiffness in muscles, and apply a tightening
pressure to the blood and lymph vessels. This increased pressure can in turn
affect the function of the body’s internal organs.
Accupressure is used to relieve this blockage of energy and promote a return
to balance and bodily harmony that is good health. Accupressure uses finger
pressure on specific and significant points throughout the body to activate
the body’s energy and lead a pre-emptive fight against illness and disease.
Performed in the same way as traditional massage, various parts of the body
can be used to massage specific pressure points. The basic accupressure massage
technique is to use the finger and thumb to press down on the body in rapid
a circular motion. Other techniques include rubbing, kneading, percussion and
vibration. As well as using thumb and finger it is also possible to use hands,
knees, feet and elbows to apply pressure.
The purpose of accupressure is to re-harmonize the body and as such a technique
it has many traditional medical uses, treating a range of ailments including:
- Tension
- Stress
- Aches & pains
- Tiredness
- Arthritis
- Menstrual cramps
- Depression
- Migraines.
