Elderberry

What is Elderberry?

The Elderberry is a tree-like shrub that is found in Europe and North America and can grow up to 12 feet tall. The Elderberry produces serrated leaves, delicate flowers and juicy berries that are used for their beneficial healing properties.

What are the benefits and uses of Elderberry?

The Elderberry produces leaves, flower and berries, each their own uses and benefits.

  • Elder leaves

Elder leaves contain many types of flavonoids, alkaloids and vitamin C. Fresh elder leaves also contain hydrocyanic acid and a considerable quantity of potassium nitrate. They are usually used as a leaf ointment as a remedy for wounds and bruises, and can be rubbed on the back to promote easier breathing from colds and flu.

  • Elder flowers

Elder flowers are a mild astringent and are used in skin washes to refine the complexion and help relieve eczema and acne..

Elder flowers have many properties and their uses are not limited to one type of problem. They are most known for their use in treating clod and fevers, however they are used in many other ways to. The list below shows the main medical conditions that Elder flowers can be used to help treat:

Elderberry dosage depends on the whether you are using the leaves, flowers or berries to treat a condition. Leaves and flowers can be made into tea or used as extracts, the berries are usually eaten or made into a paste and applied topically. What are the side effects of Elderberry?
