Plant sterols
Plant sterols are natural compounds found in many plants. Vegetable oils are
the main source of plant sterols but they are also present in nuts, seeds and
cereals. Traces can also be found in fruit and vegetables. It has been found
that higher consumption levels of plant sterols can lower blood cholesterol
absorption as plant sterols help to inhibit the absorption of cholesterol in
the small intestine. This means we absorb less cholesterol from the food we
eat and that made by our body.
