Ayurveda
Ayurveda (pronounced eye-yer-vay-duh) is the art of healthy living that enables
you to create harmony in daily life by applying self-knowledge and self-care.
The word, Ayurveda, is from the ancient Indian language, Sanskrit, and literally
means "Knowledge of Life".
Known throughout the world as an ancient Indian approach to health and wellness,
Ayurveda; the science of life, prevention and longevity, is the oldest and most
holistic medical system available today. Ayurveda is a science of health
specific, not disease specific, and takes into account a person’s entire personality;
body, mind and spirit.
There are three main Ayurveda texts that are still used today and these are:
- Charak Samhita
- Sushrut Samhita
- Ashtangha Hridaya Samhita
These texts teach that Ayurveda is an approach to life involves listening to
and addressing the unique needs of your body, recognizing and balancing your
mental and emotional states and deepening your connection with your spirit your
essential self.
Ayurveda works by dividing the universe into three basic constitutions
or "energies" known as doshas. These three doshas are based on wind (vata),
fire (pitta), and earth (kapha) and are also govern our bodies, personalities,
and activities. When our doshas are balanced, the body functions well, but when
they are not balanced, a state of disease can set in. The purpose of Ayurveda
is to find a balance and involves changing your diet to suit your predominant
dosha, doing certain yoga exercises, meditation and avoiding or incorporating
certain lifestyle habits. The doshas are recognized as being fundamental to
all life and are seen in the processes of growth, maintenance, and decay
Ayurveda botanical formulas combine herbs traditionally used within
this ancient system of Ayurveda to promote overall health and well-being.
Although the benefits of Ayurveda are not very well known it is used
in the following cases:
- To relieve stress
- To help maintain mental acuity
- To support healthy liver function
- To support the body’s immune system
- To support male vitality and boost stamina
